This experience happened in MN in 2006, around the end of October- I know it was towards the end of October as my flight back to the UK was at the beginning of November. The place this happened at was the Holy Name cemetery at around 8pm, so pretty dark apart from road lights (very quiet road), the solar lights on the graves and our torch lights (flash lights).
I was with 2 friends who were local to MN and one had particularly wanted to visit this cemetery at night as despite her visits during daylight hours, she felt if a visit happened in the dark hours, something may occur (she thought something along the lines of EVP, light anomalies etc) .
Strangely enough, she was the only one out of us 3 to not see this creature when it appeared. You could enter the cemetery by car and actually drive though it but we parked up just inside the entry road and got out to walk along the gravelled road/path. The graves were on your right, slightly up hill and to the left, there was a big pond/small lake which had a grass verge and then the gravel path/road.
My friend J, had a video camera and focused on the grave area, I was in the middle, recording on my digital voice recorder & pointing my torch/flash light towards the gravel path as was my other friend M. I kept saying I felt uneasy and was slightly agitated for no reason as Im not afraid of the dark or cemeteries . We walked along the gravel path, with it crunching beneath our unison footsteps, when my torch shone upon something darker than dark.
I lifted my torch up to see what it was and as I looked right up to where my torch shone, I saw this creature, who was solid black yet it had texture to it and it was slowly coming out from the body of water, along the grassy verge and then the gravel path. I saw what looked like shiny, rubber wings, which were attached to, well I want to say an arm as the creature was pulling its wing up and across its face so its face wouldn't be seen . The only thing I can compare that action to is the old Bela Lugosi character, who would shield its face/eyes with a cape. It stood around 9 ft tall, on 2 legs (it was showing its side profile and looking towards the grave area)
When I saw it, it felt as though I had been punched in the stomach/solar plexus area and I felt winded. All I could muster saying was "What's that?" My friend M (to my left) said " I see it too"- I responded by saying "I don't like it here" so M and myself ran the 300 yards back to the parked car, leaving J there all on her own and with the car keys! My friend J insisted on driving the car through the cemetery despite M and I protesting for her not to as we were very shook up. She felt we had seen a deer but even I know Deer don't have bat like wings!
Nothing was there (thank goodness) when J drove us through. I said that this creature never made a noise, despite me seeing it kind of slither/come out of the water and onto the gravel path. If I had to take a guess at what it sort of looked like then I would say a giant Bat (as the wings had the same shiny, rubbery texture) or a giant bird. The wings, if they had been down position, would be as long as the body of the creature. It was the density of the creature that first shocked me- it was the blackest, darkest thing I had ever seen. I did find it odd why it wanted to hide its face though? M also said she saw the darkest of dark winged creature and also had no idea what it was.
When I got back to my home in the UK, I tried to research what this creature may have been but all my searches came up with were the Mothman but I saw no eyes, let alone red ones. I also came across the Native American legend of the Thunderbird but again, apart from it being a large winged creature, nothing else seemed to fit.
I have no real idea of what my friend & I witnessed that evening and it still puzzles me to this day.
At the time I had this experience, I was deeply into meditation and cannot be sure if that had anything to do with this event or not. I may still have the digital voice recording of this experience on my old laptop.
